On Friday, 23 October 2015, The Mothers for the Future a programme run and let by sex workers which supports female sex workers be the best mothers they can be is hosting their first annual fundraiser event. The event will be will be held on the 23 October 2015 at the SWEAT head office. The event will be a platform where sex workers mothers will be sharing their life stories and how they put their children first. The theme of this first annual fundraiser ‘mmagwana otswara thipa ka bohaleng’ speaks to the resilient sex worker mothers have to support their children despite the stringent laws used against sex workers. The current law under the ‘Sexual Offences act 23 of 1957’ states that ‘persons living on earnings of prostitution… shall be guilty of an offence’ meaning that children of sex workers are by default criminals. “Children of sex workers deserve the right to education, health and safety, the South African government should respect my job and decriminalise sex work for my children’s future”, say Mothers for the Future, Duduzile Dlamini. The fundraiser will consist of a raffle draw, pay & taste African cuisine and many more. Mothers for the Future programme objectives are: Provide basic healthcare services, referrals, and educational materials to mothers; Highlight the importance, methods, and locations to access safe family planning; Educate and refer mothers to legal support and social development grants and assist with necessary applications; Discuss safe child care techniques and link mothers to services; provide reproductive health support for sex workers; And support mothers and the community to embrace mothers who are sex workers and their children.
